Jay Thomas

Jay Thomas writes sensual music with beats and string arrangements that evoke fantasy and escapism, while addressing grief, trauma, and self-actualization. His androgynous voice travels from gentle and soothing to coarse and raw in primal chants. Thomas’ lyrics are influenced by his studies in poetry and philosophy, as well as the cultural commentary in Horror, Science Fiction, and Comedy.

Jay Thomas became known in Miami through his band Bluejay releasing two albums, Goblins [2010] and Mercury [2012], and performing at festivals such as III Points, House of Creatives Music Festival, and TransAtlantic Music Festival. As a queer alternative solo artist, Jay Thomas released Fantasma Tropical [2019] and performed at Miami Beach Gay Pride and Wigwood.

His latest work is a concept album, Butterfly Parade, he won the Knight New Work grant to produce. The album addresses the collective trauma of quarantine and the divisiveness of contemporary culture.

“Setting up and subverting expectations

is one of the ways Jay Thomas gets his kicks.”

“Moody. Nostalgic. Dreamy. Fantasy-like.

In other words: hard to put in a box.”
